It is one of the most basic of human needs. The need to feel needed and connected with others. It all began, well….in the beginning. God created a man from the ground and named this man Adam. God put Adam in the garden that He created….and it wasn't long before Adam's need was known.
18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man. 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
It is not good for people to be alone. God created human beings to be communal. People need to laugh, love, cry & share their lives together. When they do they are filling a need that there were born to fill. Even God Himself lives in community (The Father, The Son & The Holy Spirit). Several times in the OT, God uses the word "us" to refer to the rest of the Triune Godhead. God hates loneliness. We are hard wired for such genuine and real relationships. After all, we are made in the image of God. God first wants you to connect with Him. It is amazing to me how lonely people are in the world. A world with over six billion people! How is that possible? This is possibly why social media is such a hit with people.
The most popular social media website is Facebook. Facebook now claims they have just passed 500 million users!!!! According to Facebook, 250 million of those users log in daily! Facebook is a great place to connect. Within a few days of me joining Facebook a couple of years ago…..I was instantly connected with old friends from high school & college I though I'd never hear from again. Twitter has also come on full steam ahead. They now have 100 million users who post 55 million tweets a day! Most of these facebook posts and tweets are meaningless…but there is a deeper sense of connection. Myspace, Foursqure are other examples of websites that help people connect. Social media has helped me connect with others to find my blog. When I publish this article…a tweet and a status update goes out to my friends and followers. People want to feel like they belong.
Some people may disagree with this article and say they just want to be left alone. That may be true. However they still have a need for connection. There is a place for solitude. In my next article…I'm going to take it to the next level. Facebook and Twitter are great….but if it goes no deeper….than something big is missing.
How about you? Do you feel a need to belong? How do you connect with others? How has social media changed your perception of others and the world. Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment. :)
