“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” – Deuteronomy 4:24

God is a jealous God? He is a consuming fire? How often do you think of God in that way? This is not the portrayal of God that you normally hear. However, this is exactly the way the Bible portrays God. Don’t be confused. This is not the kind of jealousy that consumes you and me with selfish ambition. Our jealousy is lived out from the depths of our own depraved heart. Our jealously comes from a darkness which casts its shadow on the world all around us. This shadow emanates from our heart and is self-seeking and self-pleasing.

God, however, is just in His jealousy, because it emanates from the beauty of His Glory. What is it that God is jealous about? God is jealous over the renown of His name. Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Moses penned the words to describe what makes God burn with passion. In context, Moses was specifically saying this to warn Israel of the foolishness of their idolatry. To worship a carved statue is to rob God of the glory that belongs solely to Him.  He is jealous for His Glory.

God did not create you because He was lonely. He did not save you because he “had to”. He did not call you to serve Him because He needed you. The complete opposite is true. You need Him! You and I were created, saved and called for God’s glory. As we begin this 40 Days, I want you to take the spotlight off of yourself. I want you to burn for what makes God burn with joy. I want you to dethrone your glory and glorify Him.  I’m not asking you to make God the Lord.  He already is The Lord, and thus, needs no permission from you and me.

You will only feel the true satisfaction that your heart desires when your heart surrenders to the light of a Holy and Jealous God. May the light of His glory shine bright on you and remove the shadows of your heart. You are not God. Whose light shines brighter?  Who deserves praise?  Who created whom? What consumes you today? May the glory of God consume your heart so that you will see that there is no better way to live.

“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.” – Isaiah 44:6-8
